Our Missions
URUK is a non-profit social services agency empowering women from the Middle East and beyond. Uruk is named for one of the oldest civilization in the known world Uruk Human Services was established by a few Middle Eastern women who recently came to Chicago’s North Side as refugees and asylum seekers. As these women adjust to their new lives in the United States they need guidance and support to realize their own American Dream.
Realizing their responsibility to these new sisters in America Uruk seeks to assist and empower these women to embrace their new home while honoring and remembering their own rich cultural heritage.
Uruk seeks to provide bridges for these women in the areas of education, legal counseling and human services as they explore their new lives in the United States with educational programs including career training, language classes, legal counseling with a focus on immigration law and understanding women’s and children’s rights under U.S. law. Uruk will also serve as a clearing house connecting clients with city services.
From the days of the Mayflower communities of immigrants have always relied on the generosity of others in their communities to empower them to become independently successful against all odds including discrimination, language barriers, ignorance and misunderstanding. Through developing a sense of community empowerment Uruk seeks to help these women thrive. Uruk will rely on the expertise of volunteer professionals and private donations to initiate its mission of empowerment and community.
